Is Texas really hot state?
Texas is America's fourth-hottest state, with an average annual temperature of 65.8°F (18.8°C). Texas's climate is divided. The state's east side experiences sub-tropical conditions, including high precipitation and humidity.
The winters are fairly mild. However, due to the size of our state, the temperature variance from the northernmost and southernmost points in Texas is an average of 20 degrees, with the southern tip (known as the Rio Grande Valley) usually in the 60's and 70's in the winter.

Some of the coldest weather to ever hit Texas occurred on February 12th of that year. The lowest temperature ever recorded in the state occurred at Tulia in Swisher County in the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. The thermometer dropped to 23 degrees below zero.
But Texas summers are a lot hotter than they are in Northern California, with its milder climate, diverse geography, and plentiful biking opportunities and outdoor activities, which Backus misses.

These months include December, January, and February. In other words, I wouldn't recommend visiting Texas in November if you're hoping to see snow. The great news is that since December is one of the months in which Texas is likely to experience snow, you may just be able to have a white Christmas with your family.
While you can expect annual snowfall in northern Texas, the state averages less than 2 inches yearly. Central and southern Texas are known for mild winters with high temperatures in the mid-60s. The winter storm of February 2021 was a rare occurrence for the Lone Star State.
On Christmas Day, 6 inches of snow fell across Dallas and Collin County. The official climate site at Fort Worth recorded 2 inches of snow, but the Weather Bureau office in Dallas measured 6.4 inches December 24-25, 6.3 inches of which fell on Christmas Day. Much of the snow was gone by the afternoon of Christmas Day.
As far as rainfall is concerned, the western part of Texas (see Amarillo, Lubbock, El Paso) is arid, while the eastern part (see Houston, Beaumont), where rainfall exceeds 1,200 mm (47 in) per year, is rainy.
Snow falls in 49 of the 50 states in most winters; Florida being the lone exception. Northern portions of Florida, especially in the panhandle, experience some flurries during most, but not all winters.

The Texas drought is the main culprit of the spring heat wave, according to the National Weather Service. More than half the state is under extreme drought conditions, with nearly one-fourth of Texas in exceptional drought as of last week.
Hotter-feeling days expected to increase in Central Texas

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the hottest maximum temperature ever recorded in Texas occurred on June 28, 1994 in Monahans, which is a city in Ward County located near Odessa.
“We definitely get extreme weather occasionally in Texas,” said state climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon. “Some of the most extreme weather in the U.S. happens here, particularly at the wet end.” Nielsen-Gammon is also a professor at Texas A&M University.

The latest map shows no changes from the previous week. Texas began 2022 with 67 percent of the state in drought, which expanded to 97 percent in late July—its maximum extent during the year. Drought reached its smallest extent for the year in late December and ended the year impacting less than half the state.
The answer is in the Panhandle, particularly around and north of Amarillo. Amarillo has an average summer temperature of 76.5 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Average lows from June to August in Amarillo range from 61 to 65.2 degrees, and average summer highs range from 87.7 to 91.4 degrees.
In Texas, that means average temperatures could increase by up to four degrees Farenheit by 2040. The heat will be felt most in the summer. “Every couple of degrees of warming basically doubles the number of 100-degree days we experience,” he said.
