Old anvils are generally overrated and overpriced, especially compared to new ones. Only the best of the best antique anvils in as new condition compare well in quality, and for those you would be paying collector prices. For blades a flat face is useful, much easier to find new.

The common blacksmith's anvil is made of either forged or cast steel, forged wrought iron with a hard steel face or cast iron with a hard steel face. Cast iron anvils are not used for forging as they are incapable of standing up to the impact and will crack and dent.
